TB day Commemorated in Soshanguve Clinic

The 24th of March 2017 marked the World TB Day, this day is designed to build public awareness that tuberculosis today remains an epidemic in much of the world, causing the deaths of nearly one and half million people each year.

In recognition of World TB Day 2017, Department of Health together with Dilation and curettage (D&C) have launched a series of original research in collaboration with the public clinics and Hospitals, Soshanguve was one of the places which took part.
The collection included addressing the community with evidence and innovation in the diagnosis, management and prevention of tuberculosis, as well as particular challenges affecting vulnerable populations.

“The heaviest burden is carried by communities which already face socio-economic challenges: migrants, refugees, prisoners, miners and others working and living in risk-prone settings, and marginalized women, children and older people” says Dr Mabuza from Soshanguve Clinic.

Forty-four years old tuberculosis survivor Elisa Mathosi said, she spent 6months confined at her home while being treated for multidrug-resistant of TB, “ I am making up for that isolation by speaking publicly about this ordeal, I had the toughest time of my life, staying indoors and facing the disease alone with no one around me”.

Though TB is a medical disease, it has a lot of socio economic confounders. There is slow progress in tackling the drug-resistant, now TB cases remain without a diagnosis.
